BooksThe following books are written for younger children and are appropriate for Kindergarteners. However, I know this is a sensitive subject and not all parents will be comfortable with every topic discussed. If you have concerns, I suggest pre-screening videos prior to watching. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. |
The Puddle Jumper's Guide to Kicking Cancer is great for friends and helps explain what Penn is going through.
This book helps explain to children what Penn's nose tubie is for. Penn actually has a nose to jejunum (intestines) tubie because his stomach stopped being able to hold a lot of food because of his chemotherapy medicine.
Chemo to the Rescue is a book meant to educate kids with Leukemia about how chemotherapy helps them. It goes into more detail about the science of Leukemia and talks about what is in our blood.
CartoonsThese videos are made for kids but go into slightly more detail. Again, I suggest pre-screening the videos if you are worried about how much information your child is ready for. The third video is made for medical students, but Penn actually really enjoys watching them so I think other kids might as well! |
This cartoon educates kids about what it's like to be a child with cancer. It goes a lot more in depth about being at the hospital.
This cartoon talks about cancer in general - less specific to Penn's situation but still very educational.
For kids interested in learning more about the science of Leukemia, this is a much more advanced video, but the illustrations make it very kid-friendly and Penn loves to watch them to learn about his body.
